L'Assut

L'Assut, situated three kilometres north of the town of Xerta in the territory of the lower River Ebre (Catalonia - Spain), of about 310 metres long, it forms both the left and right tributaries of the River Ebre (the first and most important river in the Iberic Peninsula and the third of the Mediterranean Sea). The first origins of L'Assut are unknown, however, it is certain that it had come into existence by the Islamic period. The works were considered to be finished on 31st August 1446, although they were not completed, as two irrigation channels were still to be constructed. L'Assut was prepared in the mid - XIX century for the construction of the right channel, inaugurated in 1857 and later, in 1908, the construction of the left channel was started, being finally completed and inaugurated in 1912.
